Sustainable Agriculture

“If the farmer is rich, then so is the nation"

- Amit Kalantri

Since 2008, SCODWES has positively impacted the lives of over 200,000 farmers through various agriculture and natural resource management projects. Our goal is to improve agricultural practices and livelihoods, helping farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions.

We emphasize a holistic approach to farming, supporting various categories including poultry, aquaculture, apiculture, organic farming, and more. By promoting sustainable practices, we aim to foster resilience in farming communities, ensuring food security and enhancing biodiversity for future generations. Through our targeted interventions and dedicated support, SCODWES is dedicated to fostering a more sustainable and thriving agricultural landscape.

Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs)

As a CBBO and Resource Institute, we have successfully promoted 60 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) across various districts in the state under several central and state schemes, including the 10,000 FPOs scheme, Amrith, RKVY, and NCDC and others. Through these FPOs, approximately 45,000 farmers are reaping the benefits. We support diverse farming communities by mobilizing and organizing them, facilitating input supply, establishing marketing linkages, value-chain development and providing training and capacity-building initiatives to sustain them.

Watershed Development

SCODWES's primary objective in watershed development is to enhance the management and utilization of water resources in a sustainable manner. Our integrated approach to watershed development emphasizes community participation, stakeholder engagement, integrated resource management, and the implementation of soil and water conservation techniques. To date, we have implemented 7 integrated watershed development projects across 5 districts in Karnataka and 1 district in Andhra Pradesh, covering more than 250,000 hectares of watershed area through this intervention.

Organic farming

We place a high priority on promoting organic farming. Our approach begins by sensitizing farmers to transition their practices towards organic methods. Following this, we provide extensive training and exposure to organic farming techniques. Under this intervention, we encourage farmers to adopt traditional practices, such as using organic manures and insecticides, utilizing indigenous seed varieties, and implementing traditional harvesting and processing methods. With the support of various CSR and government agencies, we have successfully served 1,569 hectares, benefiting 5,772 farmers to date.
Apiculture

Apiculture

With the support of various CSR agencies, we are promoting apiculture in the Western Ghats region. Our initiative targets small, marginal farmers and forest-fringe community, aiming to enhance their income through beekeeping activities. We organize training sessions in collaboration with technical experts and provide bee colonies to the identified farmers and guiding them on the systematic maintenance of these colonies. Additionally, we assist farmers in marketing their honey. To date, approximately 1000+ farmers have benefited from the program, with a total of 3,473 bee colonies distributed to the beneficiaries.
Hen Shed

Poultry farming

We are committed to enhancing the resilience and income levels of farming communities through integrated farming practices. In line with this goal, we promote backyard poultry farming among the tribes in and around our intervention areas. Our approach includes capacity building, support for constructing poultry sheds, and the distribution of country chicks. Additionally, we facilitate the marketing of their products through Poultry Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). As a result of our intervention, we have successfully constructed 210 poultry sheds, distributed over 5,000 country chicks, and supported more than 1,350 families.

Aquaculture

To support the coastal communities that rely on fishing and allied activities, we have initiated interventions in aquaculture in the coastal belts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts. Our primary focus is on organizing these farming communities into their own groups and facilitating connections with various mainstream institutions to help them access essential services. Since 2009, we have conducted 2,865 training sessions across Karnataka and 1,200 in Goa, focusing on fish quality management, conservation, and sustainable fishing. As a result of these initiatives, approximately 100,000 individuals covered.
