“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”

- Mahatma Gandhi

Karnataka’s diverse landscape includes 27,028 inhabited villages alongside 2,362 sparsely populated ones, presenting significant challenges in healthcare accessibility. Among the 2,562 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) available, a majority are situated in suburban regions, which leaves many remote villages underserved. Our motto is to bridge this gap by ensuring that essential healthcare services reach the most vulnerable populations through our comprehensive programs.

We have developed two key approaches for health interventions. The first is curative care, in which running mobile medical clinics, primary health centres, smart clinics, specialized care for endosulfan victims, and both general and specialized health camps are core activities. The second approach is community healthcare activities, which works on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), anaemia reduction, menstrual hygiene, and health awareness programs.

Key Interventions

Mobile Clinic Unit (MCU) V2

Mobile Medical Units (MMU)

Since 2008, SCODWES has been a pioneer in mobile healthcare delivery. We launched 48 Mobile Medical Units (MMU), serving 24 districts and treating 2.1 million patients to date. These MMUs bring vital medical care to communities lacking access to healthcare facilities, particularly in rural and remote areas. Today, 24 MMU continue to operate, ensuring that basic healthcare services such as diagnosis, treatment, and medication are readily available to those who need them most.

Primary Healthcare Centers (PHC)

To deepen our impact, we operate Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in some of the most underserved regions, including Diggi and Castlerock (Joida taluk). These centers have collectively treated 31,062 patients, providing essential healthcare services to isolated communities. Through a partnership with NPCIL Kaiga, we established another PHC in Mallapur, Karwar, which has treated 186,278 cases. Additionally, our e-LAJ Smart Clinic in Mainalli, Mundgod offers early diagnostic services for local tribal populations, helping them access advanced healthcare at their doorstep.

Anaemia reduction programs

In partnership with the CSR agency, we launched an initiative focused on combating iron deficiency and anaemia among adolescents. As part of this program, we set up nutri-gardens in 25 schools, providing sustainable access to fresh produce for midday meals. Additionally, we are distributing tablets and nutri-biscuits, conducting health screenings, promoting healthy practices, and implemented educational campaigns, benefiting 8,000 adolescents in the project area. We have raised awareness about anemia in 50 government schools through sessions, wall writing, and the distribution of Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) materials.
Endosulfan

Endosulfan care

Endosulfan poisoning has left many communities struggling with multiple health issues. SCODWES operates six dedicated Mobile Medical Units to provide specialized care for 1,730 individuals affected by endosulfan-related disorders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we extended our support by distributing 2,171 dry ration kits and treating 702 patients via our innovative Bike Medical Unit—a nimble response to the unique challenges posed by the crisis.
E Laj

e-LAJ Smart Clinics

SCODWES, in collaboration with the Biocon Foundation, is operating two e-Laj smart clinics in Uttarakannada district. This clinic is equipped with advanced technology that facilitates the creation of computerized patient records, conducts various diagnostic tests, and monitors vital signs. The e-Laj approach aims to deliver data-driven healthcare by utilizing socio-demographic and health indicators obtained from clinical tests. Primary Health Clinics (PHCs) are being transformed into comprehensive care centres, with systematic documentation of patient data made possible through the e-Laj model. Our smart clinic is staffed by a team comprising a doctor, a lab technician, a data operator, and outreach workers, all trained to manage modern diagnostic equipment and clinic management software. Importantly, this clinic offers healthcare services free of charge to the community.

WASH-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Access to clean water is a cornerstone of public health, and through the Jal Jeevan Mission, SCODWES has ensured that 1,280 villages in Uttara Kannada and 246 villages in Udupi now have access to safe drinking water. Our efforts have benefited over 448,000 households, and through 351 Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) programs, we continue to educate communities on the importance of hygiene and clean water to prevent waterborne diseases. To enhance sanitation practices in government schools, we have built hand wash units in 10 schools, ensuring they have access to a reliable water supply. Additionally, we have provided drinking water facilities to schools in need. We are placing a strong emphasis on menstrual hygiene awareness for adolescent girls in government schools and rural women. With the support of the Desai Foundation Trust, we have established a sanitary napkin production unit. As part of this initiative, we are distributing sanitary napkins to 6,800 adolescent girls in selected government schools and offering them at affordable prices to over 25,000 rural women.

Health camps and awareness creation

SCODWES organizes two types of health camps: general camps and special camps. General camps focus on diagnosing common illnesses, while special camps address specific and chronic illnesses, including various types of cancer, dental issues, heart-related diseases, and more. To date, we have organized over 250 camps and provided care to more than 28,000 patients. We have also developed various materials to raise awareness about important health issues in the community. Our awareness campaigns cover a range of topics, including breast and cervical cancer, pregnancy care, menstrual hygiene, childhood malnutrition, safe drinking water, and many others.
